Young as Grappa
...to distil is to imitate the sun, which evaporates the waters of the earth and sends them back in rain [Discorides Pedanius - 1st century BC].
The word Grappa is a living oxymoron: dry yet delicate, powerful yet fine. As rustic as it is elegant and generous: crystalline yet explosive, ancient, indeed, evergreen.
Grappa has a reputation for being the first noble waste product of wine.
That times have changed more or less for everything around us is common knowledge. Equally, it must be said that if at consumption levels Grappa has lost its sceptre as the Queen of Italian Distillates, it is certainly not to blame. And yet, rather than looking back to when Grappa was the Alpine soldier's best friend, the war veteran's consolation, Barba Toni's panacea, Gino Veronelli's ecstasy, the smuggler's lust or the alcoholic's black hole, it seemed appropriate to look ahead and question a handful of authoritative voices of thirty-somethings, or less. As youngsters, they learned about the art of distilling Vinaccia and today they proudly and with foresight carry forward this product, which... cannot be more Italian than that.
